Forty-one years ago a doctor told me I had two years to live.

I decided that wasn't my story.

I trusted God, went to technical school, graduated head of my class, and spent 25 years turning wrenches for Cadillac — training every new technician that came through the door. Helping people has never been just a job for me. It's who I am.

Then I discovered the fire department.

I volunteered, fell in love with serving my community, went back to school, and became a paid firefighter paramedic. Along the way I met the most incredible woman — who was just beginning her own battle with not one but two different cancers. She fought hard, started volunteering with the department herself, and together we built a life around showing up for people in their hardest moments.

For 12 years that was our world.

Then my own health forced me to walk away from the department. The income dropped to a third of what we were used to. My honey's battle continues. And at 61 I found myself starting over again — this time online.

So here I am. Still a helper. Still a servant. Still showing up.
